The Magic of a Book Becoming
Hello beloved reader,
On Monday, May 19th, I began a 4-week class led by the English author Beth Kempton: The Book Proposal Masterclass. I’ll be immersed in that for the next month or so, and I’m already feeling deeply nourished by it.
Today, I want to share something Beth shared with us—words I find profoundly inspiring.
“What an astonishing thing a book is. It’s a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. But one glance at it and you’re inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an author is speaking clearly and silently inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs. Books break the shackles of time. A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic.”

This quote makes me smile—not just because it’s beautiful, but because it brings me back to a childhood dream. There was a time when I very much wanted to be a magician. My maternal grandmother even made me a magician’s costume from a beautiful white fabric with golden swirls. I wish I had a photo. I can still remember the little suitcase that held all my magic tricks.
Perhaps as children, we’re closer to what our soul longs to express in this human experience.

Another thing I’m loving about this class is the clarity it’s bringing about the market into which my book will be published.
This book wanting to be written through me, will belong in the following categories:
SELF-HELP, SPIRITUALITY
(often merged to SPIRITUAL SELF-HELP)
and
ENVIRONMENT & NATURE / ECOLOGY.
In essence, it will explore the spiritual dimensions of the ecological crisis, and how our interiority impacts our exteriority.1
